Abstract

Molecular and morphological evidence reveals a new species of lizard endemic to Cordón de Cantillana (Squamata, Liolaemidae). The genus Liolaemus has a high diversity of species in both the Andes Mountains and the Coastal Range of central Chile. A population attributed to Liolaemus nigroviridis, isolated in the Cordón de Cantillana in the Coastal Range, was studied. Recent genomic analyses conclude that this population is genetically isolated. We performed a molecular mitochondrial and morphological analysis, examining scalation and coloration patterns, and concluded that this population belongs to an independent evolutionary lineage. We also identified morphological characteristics that distinguish it from other species in the group. In this work, we describe it as a new species to science.
