Abstract

Viola auricolor Skottsb., Viola sacculus Skottsb. and Viola columnaris Skottsb., well-documented Andean elements in the flora of Patagonian Argentina, are added as new records for Chile. They are supported by cited speci-mens. All three were first described from multiple syntypes. An explanation is given of unresolved problems experienced while trying to trace these in herbaria, which nullified the intended selection of lectotypes here, as would be preferable in the interests of modern taxonomy. Related topics discussed include systematic complications due to morphological variation and insufficient critical information, as well as difficulties that can arise when ascribing national distributions.
