Abstract

The neotype of Phymaturus palluma (Bell, 1843) is redescribed and its morphometric traits are analized in comparison with the congeneric species Phymaturus vociferator, P. gynechlomus and Phymaturus aff. palluma (Sierra de Uspallata, Mendoza) from Argentina and Chile. The statistic position of the neotype (a female) is classified by means of an discriminant analysis of morphometric variables. These analyses suggest two primary conclusions. First, the population from Uspallata-Paramillos is identified as the species collected by Darwin during his trip, given the phenotypic similarities observed with the specimen housed in the British Museum of Natural History in London. Second, these results reject qualitative conclusions from a previous study where Phymaturus gynechlomus was considered conspecific with Phymaturus palluma. Therefore we recognize P. gynechlomus as a valid species.
