Frogs diversity in a periglacial area of the Southern Patagonian Icefield, Chilean Patagonia

This research reports the amphibian community in the “Predio Nahuel” area, conservation site of the Private Protected Area “Parque La Tapera” located near the Jorge Montt Glacier, on the northern edge of the Southern Patagonian Icefield. This periglacial zone is recent, where the landscape matrix is dominated by rocky outcrops, appearing during the glacial retreat that occurred between 1945 and 1976. A total of 101 individuals of six species were recorded: Alsodes coppingeri, Batrachyla antartandica, Chaltenobatrachus grandisonae, Nannophryne variegata, Eupsophus calcaratus and Hylorina sylvatica. Pools and streams were the habitats with the greatest diversity. The microhabitats of a new population of C. grandisonae are described.
