Abstract

The flora of Tocopilla and adjacent zones is composed of 146 vascular plant species. Among the life- forms, the therophytes represent the highest proportion of the flora (43%), but are absent during the dry years. Two vegetation units can be identified: desert scrub of Nolana peruviana on the creeks and slopes bellow 500 m of altitude, and desert scrub of Eulychnia iquiquensis and Ephedra breana on the slopes above 500 m. Some aspects regarding the flora and the relationships between vegetation and climate are discussed.
