Abstract

Thirty three lizard species, belonging to six genera from the Second Region o f Chile Antofagasta, are reviewed, particularly their taxonomy and geographical distribution. Three sets o f species are recognized, corresponding to the west coast, inland desert and pre Andes and Andes o f Antofagasta. Generic endemism is Phrynosaura. At the species level, endemism is related to generic diversity. Some ecogeographical evidences are examined to explain the distributional pattern. The temporal pattern o f distribution is examined in light o f geological and climatic data available for the area.
