Abstract

ased upon linguistic studies, the author assumes that the name of the place Curacautin -site in which proximity the rock carvings are found- corresponds to the Spanish corruption of the Mapuche words Cura Cahuin, which mean Assembly Rock. The symbols in the rock are believed to have produced hunter-magic and were made by hunter-gatherers, and not by farmers as some earlier theories suggest (Oyarzún 1910, Menghin 1964, Schobinger 1969).
