Abstract

The field work was done in the climax rainforests of the Mas a Tierra Island (Juan Fernandez archipelago), Chile. The aerobic soil fauna was studied separately in 8 different substrates inside the fo rest. Berlese-Tullgren funnels were utilized for extraction of the fauna. Data concerning the density and relative abundance were obtained, for each substrate and for the sampled taxa (See Tables 1 and 2, Pigs. 1 and 2). Interpretation and analysis are given to the average data extracted by means of a random sampling inside of a forest, without considering definite substrates. It was concluded that, owing to the large differences obtained for density and relative abundance of the taxa among the different substrates studied, it would be recommended to study them separately, i f any qualitative conclusión is to be added to the quantitative results. A separate group of samples was taken and studied, in order to demonstrate the vertical distribution o f the soil fauna, results are given in Table 3 for each taxa, showing clearly those groups with euedaphic tendences, and others prefering the first and more superficial layer.
