Abstract

Shamanism is a complex phenomenon based on faith in the existence of the supernatural. I t has been reported from all quarters of the globe, particularly in the northeastern Asiatic segment of the northern circumpolar region; yet, it has never been precisely defined. As a consequence, traits which one observer puts under the rubric of shamanism, another may put under the heading of magic, and a third under religion.
