Una vértebra caudal incompleta de metriorrínquido (Crocodylomorpha: Thalattosuchia) del Jurásico Tardío del norte de Chile, y comentarios sobre la paleobiogeografía de los talattosuquios de Sudamérica

Se describe una vértebra incompleta y aislada de un talattosuquio (SGO.PV.1092) colectada cerca de Cerritos Bayos, y se identifica como una vértebra caudal media de un metriorrínquido (cf. Metriorhynchidae gen. et sp. indet.). El espécimen representa el primer elemento caudal con preservación tridimensional de este grupo de depredadores pelágicos del Jurásico de Chile que se ha descrito y representado con figuras. Lo más probable es que provenga de niveles Oxfordianos (Jurásico Superior temprano) de la Formación Cerro Campamento. Se comenta sobre la relevancia paleobiogeográfica de fósiles axiales incompletos y aislados de talattosuquios de Sudamérica, y se discuten las implicancias de la aparente ausencia de Teleosauroidea en el registro fósil del Jurásico del continente. Actualmente no existe evidencia de la llegada del género metriorrínquido Metriorhynchus, ni de teleosauroides en el Pacífico sudoriental durante este período. Dado que históricamente se solían considerar como elementos faunísticos importantes de un intercambio biótico marino del Jurásico temprano–medio entre el Tethys occidental y la costa occidental de Sudamérica, esta falta de evidencia arroja dudas sobre la propuesta etapa pre-Oxfordiana de la hipótesis del Corredor Caribeño como una ruta de dispersión temprana de reptiles marinos Mesozoicos.
