Abstract

An anatomical description of the 117 bones that compound the skull of Merluccius gayi (Guichenot, 1848) was made. It includes a detailed description of articulations between those bones.

Bones of skull (Chondral origin).

Chondral bones of viscerocranium.

Dermical bones of the skull.

Dermical bones of viscerocranium.

Dermical bones of the opercular series.

241 bony structures (axial and appendicular skeletons) are distributed in two groups.

51 - 52 vertebrae.

Faired fins bones (pectoral and pelvic fins).

Unpaired fins bones (dorsal, caudal and anal fins).
